International Day of Peace

By REVEREND WENDY DEEBEN
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”
Matthew 5:9
At the January meeting of the Calvert Interfaith Council, we discussed the Day of Peace celebration that occurred in September. The theme of the celebration was “Weave Us Together.” The hope behind the theme is that we might become a more compassionate community and build a more peaceful world. As part of “Weave Us Together,” a basket and a weaving were created. The basket and weaving will circulate through the churches of the Calvert Interfaith Council. They are currently located on the table in our narthex with some information about the Day of Peace, the basket and the weaving.
The basket was done by Myron Brenner and Flora Barrett of Busy B’s Baskets. The weaving was done by members of St. John Vianney and Ch’Naca Fiberworks. The beads for the weaving were supplied by Leslie Downs of Bag-O-Beads.
The colors of the weaving were chosen for spiritual reasons as follows (taken from the explanation that is in the basket):
Purple: traditionally a symbol of royalty, purple is also associated with wisdom, gratitude, transcendence and healing, as well as with mourning.
Blue: associated with water, with heaven, with the soul, with faith, with peace.
Green: The color of nature. It is the color of growth, abundance, and life; both the life of all things surrounding us and our own lives.
Gold: a symbol of wealth, but also the color of sunlight, of warmth, of strength, and of hope.
Red: The color of fire, of Spirit, of passion and emotion. It is the color of energy, and literally represents our lifeblood.
Rose: Represents happiness and hope, rejoicing and innocence.
Ecru: This light brown color represents home and hearth, and the earth, from which our bodies arose and to which they will return.
White: symbolizes purity, reverence, and sacredness.
In the basket there is more information about the Day of Peace and the weaving. While the basket is displayed in the narthex the next two months I would encourage you to pray for peace and try to create a community where peace can flourish.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”
God’s Peace, Pastor Wendy
